Song of Myself (This post actually has nothing to do with Walt Whitman. I just like the title)

These are a few of my favorite things.

I love the movie The Sound of Music.

Love, love, love. (I really want to add those html hearts that make me look like I'm twelve but I won't.)

I watched it so many times growing up that I have nearly every word memorized, but the magic of that movie is new every time. It's romantic, based off a true story, has singing and dancing, a big family, of course, Julie Andrews! Need I say more? I love Julie Andrews in all her elegance and beauty. I hate her hair, though. Loathe, despise, revile Ms. Andrews hair. It's her one on screen flaw--horrendous hair. Maybe that's why I love her so. My main issue with actors and actresses is their seemingly plastic perfection on screen. How am I to bond with a person who looks like she never had a stressful--I must eat everything in sight that is not nailed down to a poisonous substance--day?

(If you don't believe me about her hair, I suggest you google it. Her hair looks like it's a cap stuck on her head. And not even a feminine cap, at that! A man cap--or worse yet, some sort of skull treatment comprised of hair. I REALLY don't like it.)

The kindle of connection is gone with a faux human masquerading as a genuine sweaty, grumpy, hungry, and only sometimes happy and clean person.  But Julie Andrews's awful hair only complements her character, Maria. That scatterbrained, kind hearted, blue jay of a would-be nun, who falls in love with a stern father of seven. It's genuine romance at its peak, with lots of cheery songs and leaping choreography to keep the movie alive. I'm a major fan. Yes, I've read the book--several times--and I know that the movie version is just that: modified, romanticized, and shinier than the real story. I mean...they ended up in Vermont and Maria turned into a hyper-controlling matriarch. However, my Julie Andrews version has none of that, and aside from helmet hair, is beautiful love story--replete with everyone's favorite bad guys, the Nazis. One of my favorite songs in the movie is "My Favorite Things" which Maria sings to the "frightened" children during a thunder storm. I've always loved thunder storms so the scene didn't compute as a child but I forgot about that because of the song.

Cream colored ponies and crisp apple strudels Doorbells and sleigh bells and schnitzel with noodles/
Wild geese that fly with the moon on their wings These are a few of my favorite things!
Girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes Snowflakes that stay on my nose and eye lashes/
Silver white winters that melt into spring These are a few of my favorite things!
When the dog bites, when the bee stings When I'm feeling sad, I simply remember my favorite
things and then I don't feel so bad!

This song always made me hungry, as a child. And, as it took me a few years to realize that "strudel" wasn't a yummy pasta, I always asked for spaghetti for dinner after watching this movie. After all that leaping and dancing along to the movie, I'd earned it.

Sing this while twirling about a room holding a pillow and you WILL feel happy (and probably silly). As for my favorite things...
 -Brothers & Sisters
Built in best friends, wedding attendants, business partners, cheerleaders, organ donors, and a group of people that you can ALWAYS share a laugh (or fifty seven) with. Definitely list worthy.
 -Road trips
Getting to see the country--albeit at 70 mph in a car...An excuse to eat junk food and read for days! Staying in hotels--always a favorite in my family. Visiting relatives and historical monuments..Mt.Rushmore anyone? Forever on the favorite things list.
-After exercise "high"
One of the few times where you can look super gross and feel smokin' hot. As in, I just worked out, I can see my muscles, or at least feel them. My blood is flowing and my heart is pounding. My body is rejoicing in being used and I feel like I just conquered the world...or..*ouch*, maybe a county. I know, Maria would not be singing about sweat..still.:)
 -Wedding day make up artists
Someone who takes an ordinarily pretty girl and transforms her into a gorgeous princess-for-a-day. Also known as a magician
 -The promise of heaven
How horrible would this life be if this was all there was? If there was not an eternal, glorious future awaiting, provided by a God who send his own Son to pay the ultimate sacrifice for my many and continual sins?
If this was a blog than more than four people read OR if I were teaching a kiddy class, I'd end this with a generic "what are YOUR favorite things" but thankfully it's not.

I've never been a fan of "make this applicable to yourself through this awkward question" method. It's just a blog post about my favorite movie and how much I hate helmet hair and love bronzer.
